Maemo 5 SDK Instructions for Gentoo

Want to build packages for the N900 from Gentoo? Gwax on the Maemo forum has excellent instructions posted.
One addendum, the ebuilds are now in Portage. There’s on unresolved bug, scratchbox-toolchain-cs2007q3-glibc2_5 needs this line added:
RESTRICT=”strip binchecks”

Hexadecatuple Computing

Sadly, the sixteen boot penguins get cut off because the Nvidia GPU installed doesn’t have kernel mode setting.

Hexadecatuple core probably won’t enter the vernacular but nothing else runs Ubuntu 9.10 quite like sixteen cores of sweet, sweet, Opteron.
I put this hardware together as a VM platform for running large numbers of KVM systems. It’s 32GB [...]

Avoid Intel GMA 500/Poulsbo

There’s lots of reasons to avoid these seemingly tempting low-power graphics chips. Adam’s post sums it up for Linux. While it’s now possible to get something working, and I have, it was slower than a well tuned VESA driver at 2D drawing operations, and only barely faster at anything else. It won’t work moving forward, [...]

Upgrade from JF 1.5 (Cupcake) to Cyanogen 1.5 (Cupcake + a taste of Donut)

CyanogenMod is a rapidly evolving build of Android for the HTC Dream (T-Mobile G1) and HTC Magic (T-Mobile myTouch) phones. If you’re running a stock T-Mobile phone but had already rooted it and installed JF’s 1.5 build, here’s the quick upgrade path to Cyanogen.
Fast upgrade instructions:

Download the latest update-cm-*-signed.zip
Rename it to update.zip
Copy it to the [...]

Input Lag

Input lag is the time it takes for a display to successfully get an image or frame from the moment the signal enters the display to your eyes. This is what causes the majority of the sync issues experienced with video games or voices on an LCD (or as this post will show, several other [...]

Lenovo 31P8950 Keyboard Mini-review

Seemingly a near perfect combination of trackpoint, three mouse buttons, ThinkPad keyboard and numpad, I had high hopes for the Lenovo 31P8950 (a.k.a. 41A5091). But it’s just another case of Lenovo cutting corners since they took on the ThinkPad brand.
The good:

TrackPoint mouse!
Generally well balanced layout.
No shrinkage of CTRL or ALT for a mostly useless Windows [...]

Dell Mini 9 Attempting Overclocking

Based on the Eee PC 701 FSB overclocking module, I took a swing at altering the FSB clock in the Dell Mini 9. To clock the FSB, the Eee driver reads and writes an address range on the i2c/smbus allocated to a timer IC and controller. Conveniently, the same address on the Dell has a [...]
